Care staff for services in Cardiff
We recruit care and support staff for care homes, nursing homes, domiciliary care and supported living services in Cardiff, for temporary cover and permanent posts.
Cardiff is in Wales, so different rules apply from those in England: a different regulator, a register for care workers, and a set timetable for renewing criminal record checks.
Who regulates care in Cardiff
Care services in Cardiff are registered and inspected by Care Inspectorate Wales. Care home and domiciliary care workers must register with Social Care Wales within six months of starting, including agency staff, and agencies must make sure the social care workers on their books are registered. We check each worker’s registration before we offer them.
Registered social care workers in Wales need an enhanced DBS certificate with the relevant barred list, and the Welsh regulations require a new certificate at least every three years unless the worker is on the DBS Update Service. Welsh regulations also ask for two written references, one of them from the last employer.
- Care regulator
- Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW), which registers care homes for adults and children and domiciliary support services.

- Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). Registered social care workers need an enhanced certificate with the relevant barred list.

Care services in Cardiff
Cardiff and Vale University Health Board serves around 472,400 people in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, employs approximately 17,000 staff and runs the University Hospital of Wales. Cardiff Council and the Vale of Glamorgan Council plan care with the health board through the Cardiff and Vale Regional Partnership Board.
The region’s Market Stability Report named a serious shortage of skilled workers as the main barrier to a stable domiciliary care market. Of the 81 registered domiciliary care providers in Cardiff and the Vale, 63 were based in Cardiff.
Across Wales, Social Care Wales estimated 6,103 vacancies in social care in its 2025 workforce report, 6.7 per cent of roles, up from 5,346 in 2024. It also found that 6.7 per cent of the workforce needed a visa to work in the UK.
The same report found that recruiting and keeping staff with the skills to support people with complex needs was a particular challenge, and warned that a lack of domiciliary care providers specialising in dementia care means some people who could be supported at home move into a care home too early. Cardiff and the Vale commission from 94 care home providers, 73 of them located in the region.

Questions from managers in Cardiff
Do agency workers in Cardiff need to be registered with Social Care Wales?
Yes, for care home and domiciliary care work. Workers must register within six months of starting, and agencies must make sure the social care staff on their books are registered. We check each worker’s registration before we offer them.
How often does a worker in Wales need a new DBS certificate?
The Welsh regulations require a new certificate at least every three years, unless the worker has joined the DBS Update Service and the check can be confirmed online.
Can you supply nurses to a nursing home in Cardiff?
Yes. Wales has no separate registration for nurse agencies, because the nursing home itself is registered with Care Inspectorate Wales. We check every nurse on the NMC register before their first shift.
