Who regulates care in Newcastle

Newcastle care services are registered with the Care Quality Commission, and children’s homes with Ofsted. Before we introduce anyone to a Newcastle service, we check identity and right to work, an enhanced DBS check with the barred list the role needs, references from recent care employers and training records.

Nurses are checked on the NMC register, and social workers against the Social Work England register.

Care regulator
Care Quality Commission (CQC) for adult social care. Ofsted registers and inspects children’s homes.
Criminal record checks
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). Care roles are usually checked at enhanced level, with the adults’ or children’s barred list where the work is regulated activity.
Workforce register
No national register for care workers. Nurses are on the NMC register, and social workers must be registered with Social Work England.
Council
  • Newcastle City Council
NHS integrated care board
  • NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board
  • The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Care services in Newcastle

The CQC’s assessment of Newcastle City Council, published in May 2026, described a care academy that guarantees interviews for people completing entry-level training, and the council’s roll-out of the Real Living Wage for contracted providers. It noted that the council did not use zero hour contracts, and that overseas workers formed a growing part of the local care workforce.

Newcastle Hospitals, which runs the Royal Victoria Infirmary and the Freeman Hospital, has around 16,500 staff. NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board plans NHS services across the region.

The Tyne and Wear Metro has 60 stations, with trains up to every six minutes at peak times, which helps staff without cars reach services across the city and its neighbours.

The same assessment reported Newcastle’s adult social care vacancy rate at 4.61 per cent in the 2024 to 2025 workforce estimates, better than the England average of 7.04 per cent. In November 2025, according to the council’s own data, nobody was waiting for residential or nursing care, 3 people were waiting for home care and 10 people were waiting for supported living for people with a learning disability and autistic people.

Senior leaders told the CQC that delays in home care were mainly linked to staffing and to sourcing support for people with additional needs, and that they were working with providers through recruitment plans and the council’s brokerage team.

Questions from managers in Newcastle

Can you find care staff who don’t drive for a service near the Metro?

Yes. Tell us your nearest Metro station and the shift times, and we offer workers who can reach you for the start.

Do you cover Gateshead and North Tyneside?

Yes, and the rest of the North East. The same CQC rules and checks apply.

Is it hard to find home care staff in Newcastle?

Less so than in many places, since the city’s care vacancy rate is below the England average. The harder part is staffing packages for people with additional needs, so that is where we look hardest for experienced workers.
